View distance, by a wide margin. Hypixel Studios documented this directly: doubling view distance roughly quadruples server workload - more chunks loaded, more entities simulated, more network. Default to conservative settings, then tune up once you have confirmed your server handles base load comfortably. Starting high and dealing with lag complaints is worse than starting modest and scaling. This is on top of the usual CPU/RAM math, not a substitute for it.
Hytale uses server-side modding - every mod, plugin, custom asset, and gameplay change lives on your server. When players connect, the server delivers everything automatically. No client-side installs, no version mismatch headaches, no "send me the modpack link" support requests. The trade-off: your server bears the full cost of mod overhead since there is no offloading to client machines. A poorly written mod tanks your server, not theirs. Plugins are server-side Java extensions (.jar files) - written by developers, they hook into the server runtime to add functionality, gameplay rules, or admin tools. Think Bukkit/Spigot for Minecraft. Mods are broader content additions delivered via Hytale's modding system - they can include assets, scripted behavior, world generation, or full gameplay overhauls. Plugins are usually for hosts and admins; mods are usually for players and content creators. Both run server-side; both arrive automatically when players connect.
Plan for 2-4GB of headroom on top of your vanilla allocation, depending on mod weight. A few quality-of-life mods add little. Worldgen mods or dense content packs can double the per-player memory footprint. Because Hytale runs all mod logic and assets server-side (no offloading to clients), modded servers genuinely need more RAM than equivalent Minecraft setups. Start higher than you think you need, monitor actual usage in the panel, then scale down if you have headroom. Scaling RAM up or down is straightforward through your Client Area.
Yes - we expose the --allow-op flag as a panel toggle in Server Options, so you control admin access explicitly rather than letting any player run /op self and grant themselves admin powers. By default in vanilla Hytale, that flag is permissive - anyone who joins can op themselves and grief the world. We've seen support tickets from self-hosters who learned this the hard way. With our toggle in place, you grant operator status to specific accounts through the panel or server console instead.
We run automated backups every 12 hours (between 2-3AM and 2-3PM CST) and retain them for 45 days. That retention window has already mattered for Hytale - Hypixel Studios warned that "data integrity cannot be guaranteed" during early access. Restores are handled by our team via a Discord or Client Area ticket and take up to 24 hours; the panel's built-in Backups tab is not active. Files over 5GB are excluded from automatic backups, so consider an external backup tool for large databases. Backups stay available even if your service is canceled, as long as they fall within the 45-day window.
Yes. Update 4 added native proximity voice chat, configured through your server.json file in the panel's File Manager. You can set the voice range, audio quality, and toggle the feature on or off there. Default range works for small servers; tune it lower for larger groups to keep audio focused. No external Discord bot or VoIP service required. It runs through Hytale's networking layer. We're working on automatic voice chat setup at server deploy as a future panel update.
No. We use a fair-usage model instead of hard CPU caps. Your server can use the resources it needs when it needs them - including burst capacity during chunk generation, player surges, or modded world events. We actively manage node health to keep that burst capacity available. This matters more for Hytale than for some games because voxel world generation and server-side mod logic are CPU-heavy and bursty. Hosts that throttle CPU per-server bottleneck on exactly the operations Hytale needs to be fast.
Yes. WinterNode is a registered Hytale Game Server Provider (GSP) with Hypixel Studios - the same partnership status held by Apex, Shockbyte, and G-Portal. The GSP program gives partners early access to server software updates, day-one documentation when patches drop, and direct coordination with the Hypixel Studios team on hosting questions. Practically: when a Hytale update breaks something, we usually know about it before our customers do, and we can patch faster than non-partner hosts.
Scaling happens in your Client Area (the billing panel), not the Game Control Panel - there is an Upgrade/Downgrade option in the sidebar that lists your service plans. Upgrades charge only the pro-rated difference for the days remaining in your billing cycle, not a full new plan price. After upgrading, restart your server and the new memory limit takes effect automatically. Downgrades work the same way; if you'd like account credit for unused time on your current plan, open a billing ticket. Not sure where to start? Hytale server updates are automatic - when Hypixel Studios ships a patch, our server software updates itself in the background. All you need to do is restart your server (about 60 seconds of downtime) and the new version is live. Your world data, mods, and configs carry through. As a registered Hytale GSP, we usually have new server builds before public release, so the auto-update tracks closely with the official patch timing. If a Hytale update breaks compatibility with a mod you are running, that is separate - Update 4 added compatibility warning flags visible in the Mod Management UI before loading a world.

I used this service from Indonesia to host a Discord bot, but unfortunately the server location is too far from my region. This resulted in higher latency and slower response times, which affected the bot’s performance, especially for real-time commands. The setup process was fairly straightforward, and the service itself worked as expected, but the distance to the server made it less ideal for my use case. For applications like Discord bots that rely on quick responses, server location plays a big role. In terms of uptime, there were occasional unexpected downtimes. However, I appreciate that the support team was quite responsive and helpful whenever issues occurred. It may still be a good option for users closer to their server regions, but for users in Indonesia, I recommend choosing a provider with servers in Asia for better performance.

Excellent and dedicated support. When my server couldn't be set up properly due to an outside issue the support had done everything within their power, and I mean everything. As much as they couldn't resolve the issue, due to a issue to do with the official game makers!! Not to do with an issue with the providers of WinterNode, they had still exhausted all options until they were 100% sure that it was not an issue they could resolve, and directed me to the correct resources to have my issue resolved. The game panel is also incredibly easy to use and has some lovely design. With server info and diagnostics for memory usage and CPU usage very well displayed and quite quick with updates. WinterNode is also incredibly affordable for a good server plan, especially for new server owners. As well as customizable with the pricing - being able to switch between levels of RAM available to buy ranging from 2GB to 25GB typically. WinterNode also provides a nice range of countries to select for their servers, including the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Finland and France. WinterNode also provides services for premium-tier Discord Bots, VPS Hosting, Game hosting and Web Hosting. For game hosting, WinterNode provides game servers from commonly large games including Minecraft, Terraria, ARK : Survival Evolved, Palworld and Hytale. Alongside less typically provided games, like SCP : Secret Laboratory which is what I am personally hosting using WinterNode. In my opinion WinterNode has easily outpaced larger service providers like Shockbyte, Bisect and other large titles. I would like to finish this by shouting out Darius from the support team, thank you for using quite the abundance of options you had attempted on my server. As much as it was not resolved, that can not be blamed on you but on Northwood (The creators of SCP:SL) haha.
